Daimler Introduces Smart Electric Scooters



Although said to be failing at the Smart four-seater roadster version and Smart Sporty, Daimler still plans to add a new model in 2014, with delivery of electric powered scooters.

Smart Electric Scooter is still a prototype, and can reach a top speed of 45 kilometers (28 miles) per hour. Last year, Daimler also introduced electric bikes, scooters presence is aimed at shoring up the image as a Smart city transportation specialist, not just a car.

"Daimler Smart is the answer to the challenges in today's large cities," said Annette Winkler, Chief Brand Smart headquarters, in Boeblingen, Germany. Annette added, the goal is to make city life a little more colorful, cheerful and healthy.

Since its introduction in 1998, the Smart unit has accumulated losses of more than 1.5 billion euros, including 120 million euro deficit this year. Therefore, to increase sales, Daimler plans to expand its line-up includes the Smart Fortwo electric scooters and electric versions.

Daimler also took Renault to work together to design a new Smart four-seater. It is expected that this new model will be available next year.

Daimler makes Smart, because it can attract younger customers and also help Daimler meet CO2 emissions restrictions, to compensate for the Mercedes-Benz engine and a larger dimension.
